About

IMG_9082The Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners group (MMDP) is a regional collective of librarians, archivists, museum curators, conservators, historians, scholars and more engaged in creating and curating digital collections in Mid-Michigan and the surrounding region. In November 2016, MMDP was awarded the National Digital Stewardship Alliance’s (NDSA) Innovation Award for Organizations for our highly original and successful organizational model in fostering innovation sharing and knowledge exchange.

Membership is open and free, and meetings are designed democratically via pre- and post-conference surveys. The mission of the group is to provide an open and local forum for conversation, collaboration and networking for professionals working with digital collections in Michigan.

Founded in 2013, the group has hosted seven day-long meetings and grown our mailing list to over 100 members. Meetings typically draw between 40 to 70 participants and have attracted student groups, practicing professionals, vendors, and even the general public.

In February of 2013, Ed Busch (Michigan State University Archives) heard about a new group for Digital Preservation Practitioners in the Detroit/Ann Arbor/Toledo/Windsor Area. He wanted to explore if there was interest in holding a session for Mid-Michigan Digital Preservation Practitioners with the purpose to get together and talk about what the various institutions are doing: projects, technologies, partners, etc.

After contacting some colleagues about this, the answer was a resounding yes! Portia Vescio (Assistant Director of the Archives) and Ed contacted Digital Curation Librarian Aaron Collie and we created Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners. Systems Librarian Ranti Junus joined the three of us to form the Mid-Michigan Digital Practitioners planning group. We’ve had great support from the MSU Archives and MSU Libraries leadership for this effort.

IMG_4748We held our first meeting at MSU in August of 2013. From the beginning, we’ve been big on using email and surveys to get ideas and help from the Mid-Michigan professionals working with digital materials.

Current members of the planning team are: Ed Busch, Aaron Collie, Nicole Garrett Smeltekop, Megan Kudzia, Matt Schultz, Max Eckard, Dallas Pillen, Robin Dean, and Graham Hukill.
